Habitat Restoration: The overall condition of a property or section of a property may need some adjustment to maximize it's function for you. This focus can take many forms. Each has it's own value depending on the needs.
Allowing to fallow for natural regeneration
Planting native plants and grasses
Controlled/prescribed burns
Removing invasive habitat
Planting supportive shrubs and trees
Creating and Maintaining Food Plots: This topic is by far the most considered and talked about technique to improve a person's deer hunting potential. There are a few thoughts to consider.
Base practice: Tilling and/or spraying chemicals and planting a perennial crop repeating in a few years
Good practice: No-till broadcasting twice a year while utilizing chemicals for weed/plant termination
Better practice: Tilling and broadcasting twice a year with minimal use of chemicals
Best practice: No-till drilling twice a year thus eliminating the need for chemicals to be used
Creating and Maintaining Hunting Plots: This topic is a reasonably new technique that will likely greatly improve a person's deer hunting effectiveness. The concepts are generally the same for Food Plots. However, the focus is on "hiding" the hunting plots to allow deer to be vulnerable in a location at dusk and dawn.
Tilling and planting techniques are often limited due to equipment access
Crop choices are often limited due to a lack of sunlight reaching the ground
Upper and under story often need to be removed to create the hunting plot space
Enhancing Wildlife Cover and Bedding: Many property owners jump right to planting food as the only option for them. We believe many properties can equally benefit from improving low cover and bedding environments.
Removing trees with large canopies to allow sunlight into the desired areas
Planting switchgrass, conifers and shrubs for long term benefits for cover, screening and bedding
Planting annual plots for screening for short term (transition) for cover and screening
Adding Deer Attractants: Deer attractants have been used for generations in the forms of bait, calls, scents.... Permanent attractants can be very exciting and provide great locations for trail cameras to collect footage of all the deer in the area as well as locations to hang a tree stand.
Install watering holes (cattle tanks) along travel corridors
Install mock scrapes along travel corridors
Creating Pleasing and Natural Environments: Whether you hunt or not, everyone wants their property to be pleasing to the eyes. There are a multitude of options to consider when looking to improve the visual appeal.
Removing and controlling the understory to be able to see the "trees through the forest"
Creating meandering walking paths thru the property
Creating quad, side-by-side or golf cart paths thru the property
Create observation locations overlooking scenic areas
